The University was founded in 1891 by entrepreneur and railway magnate, who became California Governor and Senator Leland Stanford and named in honor of his son, who died at the age of 15 years. Having lost a beloved son, a Stanford senior and his wife decided to establish the “second Harvard” on the West coast of the United States: Leland Sr. dreamed that thus the children of California became their children.

In the mid-twentieth century around the University developed the Stanford industrial Park. At the time Stanford was experiencing serious financial difficulties. University owned vast tracts of land, but according to the will of the founder, to sell them was impossible, however, about the rent in his will nothing was said. So the Dean of engineering Frederick Terman proposed to take a lease, not any companies, but only high-tech.
